Jennifer Geerlings-Simons yesterday became the first woman to be elected president of Suriname. Lawmakers supported the doctor and former parliamentary speaker more than a month after voters in this Dutch speaking Caribbean Community (Caricom) country went to the polls to elect a new government on May 25.
